Complications of Myocardial infarction

Complications in myocardial infarction are often due to muscle necrosis. Complications are –
  • Contractile dysfunction
  • Arrhythmias – most common sinus Bradycardia, heart block (asystole), tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation
  • Myocardial rupture leading to hemopericardium and cardiac tamponade 
  • Dresslers syndrome: Fibrinous or fibrinopurulent pericarditis
  • Increase in size of infarct with extension, often into right ventricle also
  • Mural thrombus leading to thromboembolism
  • Ventricular aneurysm
  • Progressive late heart failure due to chronic ischemic heart disease
