Gemistocytic astrocytoma

  • Variant of astrocytoma characterized by more than 20% of gemistocytic tumor cells.
  • Occasional occurence of gemistocytes is not considered
  • Gemistocytes has plump, glassy, eosinophilic cell bodies with angular shape. Nuclei are eccentric with small nucleoli
  • Perivascular lymphocytic cuffing will be present
  • Gemistocytes are GFAP positive immunohistochemically.
